Shooting Matches
The Benton Gun Club currently hosts 13 different types of shooting matches.  Most of our
matches are conducted once per month on a particular Saturday or Sunday, although a few
matches may be held during the week.

Match times are subject to change at the discretion of the match directors, so be sure
you have the latest schedule.
Check our Calendar for specific match times.

Rifle Matches

CMP Rimfire Sporter (New!)
This competition allows individuals to compete with inexpensive rifles in a match that emphasizes
fun and good sportsmanship.  Any safe rimfire rifle with any type of action may be used. Rifles
must have standard sporter type stocks, weight at 7.5 pounds or less, have a trigger pull of 3
pounds or more and be equipped with a scope (6X max) or peep sights.  The scope and receiver
sighted guns shoot in one class and rifles with open sights shoot in another.  Slings are allowed.
Rifles must be chambered for the .22 long rifle rimfire cartridges.  Firing is done at 50 and 25
yards, from three positions: prone, sitting (or kneeling), and standing. There are six stages, 60
shots total, including rapid (5 shots in 25 seconds) and slow (10 shots in 10 minutes).  *Currently
to get things started and not stifle participation, we are waiving the weight limit, trigger pull weight
limit, and the scope power limit (however for a variable power scopes, they must be set on the
lowest power or 6x whichever is higher). For more information see

High Power Silhouette
High-power rifle matches are not that different from any other silhouette match other than you
are shooting NRA regulation size silhouettes of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams at 200, 300,
385 and 500 meters with a high power centerfire rifle.  Once again with Silhouette shooting it is
not a matter of looking at a hole on a paper target and seeing how close you were to the center,
it’s a matter of shooting the silhouette off the rail.

Half Scale Small-bore Silhouette
This is THE match to bring the juniors out to shoot with us.  For those under 16, they shoot using
a forearm rest and their scores will normally be very good.  The juniors really enjoy hearing the
animals hit and seeing them fall AND they usually beat their Dads or Moms. Remember, that after
each half scale match we fire up the BBQ grill up and cook for a light lunch.  Bring some soft
drinks and a chair and join us.  On the cold days we bring a Coleman stove and hot chocolate.
We provide the hot dogs or hamburgers, but will accept donations to help defray the cost but it is
not required. Once again with silhouette shooting it is not a matter of looking at a hole on a paper
target and seeing how close you were to the center, it’s a matter of shooting the target off the
rail. .22 LR only.  Targets at 40, 60, 77 and 100 meters.  Two divisions: Any Sight and Iron Sight.

"As Issued" Service Rifle Match
The term "As-issued military service rifle" is basically one that was issued to the rank-and-file
soldier and not modified in any way. Examples of these are: Springfield 1903A1 or A3, Mauser
98, SKS, Schmidt-Rubin K31, M1 Carbine, Egyptian Hakim, Trapdoor Springfield, M1 Garand,
M14 , and M16. The exact equipment parameters for this classification can be found in chapter 6
of the
CMP Rulebook.  The intent of the match is to allow shooters to compete on a level field
with their military surplus rifles. The one exception for our Club matches is that the rifle may be
an exact reproduction rather than a prior military issued rifle. An example of this is the Springfield
M1A or a Rock River Arms/Colt/? AR-15 without a flash hider. The course of fire is 20 rounds for
record fired on an NRA SR target at 200 yards. Two classes will be fired: prone with military sling
and bench rest. So dust off your old military rifles and get a little trigger time in with us.

Speed Steel
This action pistol match is the ultimate test of speed and accuracy with a handgun. 1 to 18 steel
targets are placed from 10 to 20 yards and at the start signal you must draw and shoot each
target as fast as possible. We have also added a rimfire division. This new division starts from
the low ready and the strings are kept short so there are no reloads on the clock. With lots of
shooting and no targets to paste or reset, this is a fast moving match with loads of fun. Divisions:
SSP, ESP, CDP, Revolver, Limited, Open.

International Defensive Pistol Association
The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is the governing body of a shooting sport
that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounters. It was founded in 1996 as a
response to the desires of shooters worldwide. The organization now boasts membership of more
than 11,000, including members in 19 foreign countries. One of the unique facets of this sport is
that it is geared toward the new or average shooter, yet is fun, challenging and rewarding for the
experienced shooter. The founders developed the sport so that practical gear and practical guns
may be used competitively. An interested person can spend a minimal amount on equipment and
still be competitive. The firearms are grouped into five (5) divisions: 1) Custom Defensive Pistol (.
45ACP semi-automatics only); 2) Enhanced Service Pistol (9mm (9x19) or larger caliber semi-
automatics); 3) Stock Service Pistol (9mm (9x19) or larger caliber double action, double action
only, or safe action semi-automatics); 4) Enhanced Service Revolver (.38 caliber or larger double
action revolvers); and 5) Stock Service Revolver (.38 caliber or larger double action revolvers).
Equipment for delineations in the revolver divisions. Shooters are then classed by like-skill levels
with progression from Novice (NV); to Marksman (MM); to Sharpshooter (SS); to Expert (EX); and,
finally, to Master (MA).
